All-Ages Hands-On Science
Jan/Feb 2025 Term Theme: The Story of Earth, Space and Life

Every term time Monday 1230-13.15. Open to all ages and abilities who want to explore the fun, fascinating side of science. Younger children will need help and supervision from a parent. All recommended activities/experiments are suggestions only - you are very welcome to just watch them as a demonstration instead. If taking part, please ensure children have parental supervision throughout.

What's included:
  • Live, interactive sessions (weekly, 12.30-13.15pm Monday)
  • Opportunity to ask questions (typed). Student cameras/audio are NOT on.
  • Engaging quizzes
  • Session recordings for catch-up
  • Printable worksheets (2 versions of varying difficulty)
  • Experiment demonstrations/tutorials (Please note, if you choose to follow along during any experiment demonstrations, a parent/guardian must be supervising/helping students attending and are fully responsible for their safety).

Pricing/booking options:
  • Early bird discount: Pay only £15 for all six sessions in the term if you book before 6th January. That’s just £2.50 per session! THIS OPTION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

  • Standard price after discount ends: £3 per session, pay/go (sign up to sessions each week to spread payment out, anytime before each lesson starts live. Can also pick/choose to only come to some sessions if you prefer). AVAILABLE NOW

Schedule:
1.
6th January
The Big Bang and the Formation of the Universe
  • We'll explore the Big Bang theory in a way that's easy to understand. What is the evidence for the Big Bang? How do we know the universe is still expanding?
Activity: Balloon Expanding Universe
Materials needed: Balloon, marker pen, small stickers (e.g. small round ones or any colour/shape you have), balloon pump (if you don’t want to blow up manually!)

2.
13th January
The Formation of Our Solar System
  • We'll learn how our solar system formed from a swirling cloud of dust and gas.
Activity: Model the process of accretion.
Materials needed: 3-4 colours of playdough and a paper or plastic plate.

3.
20th January
Star basics
  • We’ll learn what stars are and how they produce light (nuclear fusion) and understand the concept of apparent magnitude and why stars appear to twinkle.
Activity: why do stars “twinkle”?
Materials needed: torch, tinfoil, large glass bowl of water, pen

4.
27th January
Stars continued and nebulae
  • We’ll describe different types of stars (e.g., red giants, white dwarfs), explain what nebulae are and how they are related to star formation and death, and identify different types of nebulae (e.g., emission, reflection, dark).
Activity: model nebulae in a jar
Materials needed: Jar with a lid, water, cotton wool balls, loose glitter, food colouring or acrylic paints/poster paints of 2+ colours (various colours – nebulae can appear shades of red, pink, green, blue, purple, blueish white, even black, so any colours you like!)

5.
3rd February
The Young Earth

We'll travel back in time and learn about how the oceans formed, where the atmosphere came from, and how the continents started to take shape (and drift). How did Earth get its water? What were the first continents like?
Activity: tectonic plates, continental drift, convection current models.
Materials needed: a pack of oreos!

6.
10th February
The Spark of Life
  • This webinar explores…how did life begin? We'll investigate the conditions on early Earth and learn about the building blocks of life. We'll also discuss some of the exciting experiments scientists have done to try to recreate the origins of life. What is life? What are the essential ingredients for life? Learn about the “primordial soup” theory.
  • Materials: NONE NEEDED.

Disclaimer and important safety information:
Adult supervision is essential for all experiments due to the remote and online nature of the lessons. A few experiments, depending on learner age, may be more suitable as demonstrations (you are very welcome to just watch along and will still learn lots!) rather than follow-along activities. Please use your discretion and always prioritize safety. We cannot be held responsible for any accidents that may occur. By participating in these experiments, supervising parents/guardians agree to assume full responsibility for safety.
