This half term block theme and schedule is detailed below:

Week one:  April 28th: What is a Eukaryote?
  • Optional follow along activity: Create an edible models of different eukaryotic cells! Bring a bowl or tub and a selection of edible ‘cell parts.’
    • Amy will be using:
      • Handful of grapes or large round sweets (your choice)
      • Handful of small-medium green sweets
      • Pack of strawberry laces
      • Small sweets like sprinkles or hundreds and thousands
    • Tip: Feel free to bring a variety of different shaped or sized sweets to customize your model—don’t feel you need to match Amy’s exactly! 😊
  • Optional Pre-Class Activity:
    • Prepare jelly (using gelatine sachets or a vegetarian gelatine alternative, not pre-made jelly).
    • Follow the packet instructions and let the jelly set in a refrigerator for 45 minutes to 1 hour before class. You can skip this step if you prefer! If you make the jelly, it can be incorporated into your cell model to add more sensory textures (to act as the cytoplasm). I'll show options with and without this step in the lesson of course!

May 5th: Bank Holiday Monday - No Class

Week two:  May 12th: The Protists – The Biology “Junk Drawer”
  • Explore the fascinating and diverse world of protists.
  • Optional follow along activity: Learn how amoeboid protists move.
    • Please bring:
      • Disposable glove
      • Cornstarch
      • Rubber band
      • Tape

Week three:  May 19th: Fungi Kingdom vs. Fungi-Like Protists (Slime Moulds)
  • Discover the unique differences between fungi and fungi-like protists.
  • Optional follow along Activity: Make spore prints!
    • You’ll need:
      • Mushrooms (button mushrooms like Agaricus bisporus, or any mushroom with gills—just make sure it’s safe to use!)
      • A piece of white card
      • A bowl
      • Hair spray

May 26th - 30th: Half Term – No Classes. New Block Starts June 2nd! At the end of class on May 19th, I'll ask students if they'd like to continue exploring Eukaryotic Kingdoms (focused on Protista and Fungi) in more detail or switch to a new topic in June/July. The majority vote will decide!
